In defence of shitty websites
I like shitty websites. There is something charming about a shitty website. This site started out looking slick. It was built using Astro. It looked good on my laptop, looked good on my phone, the colours all worked together. Unfortunately, it didn't look mine. It looked like someone who knew something about user interfaces put it together. But I don't know anything about making modern, responsive web apps. And it kind of feels dishonest to put stuff out in the world that looks polished when I didn't do any of the polishing. There is also a kind of pleasing minimialism that goes with stripping out all the guff. So, this site is now just basic html and css, which is actually the second round of stripping out the guff. I had a javascript library for syntax highlighting code snippets, and a css file that was stolen from the Astro template. So, in an appeal to authenticity, I have removed them. I might add them back in, but for now I kind of want to hand roll my own styling. Will it look shit? Yes. But, it will look mine.
